About the Owner
Built in 1873, the Conservation Law Foundation’s four-story building had undergone several renovations, but by 2018, the CLF felt it was looking tired, unwelcoming and not reflective of the organization’s environmental mission.
Project Overview
The project involved upgrades to the infrastructure of CLF’s existing four-story wood framed building with masonry exterior, and included a new roof, an upgraded lobby to meet ADA compliance, and new/upgraded MEPs throughout.
Project Details
The main entrance was opened up to make a welcoming lobby clad in reclaimed barn lumber with visual displays of CLF’s works. A much expanded second floor conference room now provides a flexible meeting space for meetings, classes and events with AV facilities to connect with CLFs other New England offices. The renovation refreshed all the interiors, with new finishes and LED lighting. And a new white roof and insulation reduced loads for the new, all electric HVAC system which, combined with sustainable power purchases, makes CLF’s entire energy use fossil fuel free.
This project was executed in a very tight urban setting – so tight that all deliveries and load outs had to be performed off hours.
Project Team Members
Team members included Project Architect Jonathan Austin of Austin Architects, and BBC project Team members Al Charpentier, Sr. Project Manager, and Emil Frei-Howe, Superintendent.
